About Us

The Centre for Diaspora Studies was established in December 2012 under the able guidance and dynamic leadership of Dr. Jaspal Singh, Vice-Chancellor, Punjabi University, Patiala. Since its inception the Centre is working on the lines of academic commitment of Punjabi University for the promotion of Punjabi language, literature, culture, history, religion and other disciplinary areas. The Centre owes its genesis to the farsightedness of Dr. Jaspal Singh Ji, who has been instrumental in shaping and providing guidance and support to the Centre for Diaspora Studies in every way. The Centre was formally approved by the UGC in February, 2014, its tenure starting from 1-4-2014 to 31-3-2019 for five years.

The Centre's endeavour and aim is to research and tap the intricacies, academically oriented manifestations and shifts of Indian diaspora in general and Punjabi/Sikh diaspora in particular from multiple, interdisciplinary points of views. The achievements and contributions of Punjabi diaspora have to do a lot with their zeal to move across and beyond limits and to register with success their intrepid character to explore new vistas and opportunities across continents, cultures, nations and beyond the Indian borders where they compete as a frontal transnational, global and advanced diasporic community in the West and East, North and South with other diasporic groups and ensembles. The role and intervention of Punjabis in history, politics, economy, social life, business, industry, literature, art, music, cultural life, technology, the IT sector and other coveted professions is enough to map their intervention in multiple spheres of experience, whether it is in America, Canada, the U.K., Europe, Africa, South America, Southeast Asia, Far East and the Pacific. Diaspora studies in literature, critical theory, culture, social sciences, humanities and other allied disciplines are indeed co-terminus with the intellectual and cosmopolitan human experience marked by huge shifts in 20th and 21st centuries.
